A Story Rooted in Restoration
NorthEast Christian Church is part of a movement with a rich history and a simple conviction: the church belongs to Jesus, and our lives and practices should be shaped by the Word of God.
NorthEast traces its roots to the Restoration Movement, a movement that emerged in the early 19th century in Paris, Kentucky at Cane Ridge during the Second Great Awakening. Leaders such as Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, and Barton W. Stone called Christians back to the simplicity of the New Testament church.
Rather than allowing denominational traditions, human creeds, or cultural preferences to define the church, the Restoration Movement sought to return to the Bible as the church’s foundation and to Jesus as its center. Its vision was beautifully simple: Christians united around Jesus, following Scripture, and living out the mission of the church together.
Those connected to the movement often identified themselves simply as Christians or Disciples, emphasizing that their primary identity was not found in a denomination or human leader, but in Jesus Christ.
That restoration spirit continues to shape who we are at NorthEast. We believe the Bible is God’s Word, Jesus is the center of everything, and the church is called to live out the mission Jesus entrusted to His followers.
The Story of NorthEast
On October 14, 2000, two neighborhood churches—Northern Heights Christian Church (formerly Maryland Avenue Christian Church) and Eastland Christian Church—joined together to form NorthEast Christian Church.
The story began even before the merger. Northern Heights had already purchased 10 acres in the Hamburg development, believing God was leading the church toward a new location and a new season of ministry.
In November 2001, the newly formed NorthEast Christian Church began meeting in a new multipurpose building at 990 Star Shoot Parkway. What began with a shared vision and a new church family soon became a growing ministry in the Hamburg community.
As NorthEast continued to grow, additional worship services were added and plans were developed for facilities that could serve the church’s expanding ministry. In October 2006, a new children’s facility opened. Then, on July 1, 2007, the congregation moved into its new Worship Center.
But the buildings were never the story.
People were the story. Jesus was the story. And God’s faithfulness was the story.
More Than a Building
Throughout the years, God has continued to use the NorthEast campus in ways that extend far beyond Sunday morning worship.
Our facilities have been home to church plants, a Congolese congregation, a Christian school (Veritas), a weekday preschool (The Academy), office space for other ministries, 23 mission partners around the world, and a Food Pantry that has distributed more than 1.5 million pounds of food to people in need in Lexington.
Again and again, God has opened doors for NorthEast to become a blessing; not only to the people who call NorthEast home, but to churches, ministries, families, and people throughout our community.
The campus God provided has become a tool for ministry, but our greatest resource has always been the people who faithfully say yes to Jesus and His mission.
God Has Been Faithful
For more than two decades, God has faithfully guided, provided for, and sustained NorthEast Christian Church.
From two neighborhood churches becoming one church family, to a new campus in Hamburg, to the many ministries and people who have been impacted along the way, our history is ultimately a testimony to the faithfulness of God.
We remember where we came from because it reminds us of who has carried us this far.
And we believe our best days are not behind us.
The same God who faithfully led NorthEast through every season is still leading us today. Our calling remains the same: to love God, connect people to Jesus and to one another, and make disciples who live on mission.
As we look toward the future, we do so with confidence; not because we know exactly what tomorrow holds, but because we know the One who holds it.
God has been faithful.
God is faithful.
And we believe He is not finished yet.
With His guidance, provision, and power, NorthEast Christian Church will continue to advance the Kingdom of God, serve the people of the 40509 community, and faithfully carry the gospel to generations yet to come.
This is our story.
This is God’s faithfulness.
And this is only the beginning.
