HEAR Journal

The HEAR journaling method empowers you to engage with Scripture for real transformation—not just checking off readings, but truly listening for what God is saying.

HEAR stands for Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond.
Each step helps create space to hear from God. Once you choose a reading plan and set aside a time to study God’s Word,
you’re ready to HEAR from Him.

Write the letter “H” at the top of your journal.

As you read the passage, HIGHLIGHT what jumps out and then jot some of those highlights down:

The book name

Passage (chapter and verses you actually )

One or two standout verses

A title or phrase capturing why they stood out

This helps you quickly find meaningful verses later.

Write “E”, then Explain what the passage means.

Consider:

Why was this written?

Who was it written to?

What comes before and after?

Why did the Holy Spirit include it?

What is God communicating?

This step invites thoughtful reflection and personal engagement with the Word.

Write an “A” for Apply.

Answer questions like:

How does this help me?

What does it mean for my life today?

What might God be calling me to do?

Write 2–5 sentences showing how the verse connects to your life.

Finally, write “R” for Respond.

This is your personal reply to God’s Word. It could be:

A prayer

A call to action

A way you’ll live differently because of what you’ve learned

Your response is how you apply Scripture in your heart and your life.
